C-reactive protein (CRP) is a blood protein synthesized by the liver in response to stimuli from circulating inflammatory cytokines as a class of acute-phase reactants. The serum or plasma levels of CRP rise up to 3000 times normal levels during a general, unspecific response to infections and non-infectious inflammatory processes. While CRP levels in healthy people are below 5ug/ml, in various diseases this threshold is often exceeded within four to eight hours after an acute inflammatory event, with CRP values reaching approximately 2 to 50mg/ml.
